Product Details

10R-8732 (10R8732) remanufactured engine control module — a direct-replacement ECM for Caterpillar C-10, C-12, C-16 and 3406E on-highway truck engines built under the 2KS, BDL, 3CS, 2WS and 1MM serial prefixes.

These engines have been in service a long time, and the cores that come back show two decades of road vibration and heat cycling. Each unit is opened and inspected under magnification, the board is cleaned, and the sections that age worst on this generation of hardware — the switching power supply, the electronic unit injector driver stage and the solder beneath the harness headers — are rebuilt with new components. The board is re-coated against moisture and road salt, the housing is resealed, and every finished module is run on a bench harness and function-tested to factory-specified operating parameters before it is packed.

  • Fitment on this family is decided by the engine serial prefix, not by the model badge on the valve cover: this module is listed against the 2KS, BDL, 3CS, 2WS and 1MM prefixes.
  • Direct replacement — mounts on the existing bracket and mates with the harness connectors already on the engine, so no wiring changes or adapters are needed.
  • Rebuilt to restore original operating parameters; the rating structure, engine protection and emissions strategy are left exactly as the factory defined them.
  • Unit injector driver stages and power supply components renewed, rather than a clean-and-pass rebuild — these are the circuits that carry the load on C-10, C-12 and 3406E installations.
  • Conformal-coated board and resealed die-cast housing, appropriate for a chassis and engine-mounted position exposed to spray, salt and constant vibration.
  • Searchable as both 10R-8732 and 10R8732. Supplied as a bare module requiring a flash — see the notice below.

Programming Required — Supplied Without Engine Software

The module ships with no application software, rating or personality data loaded, so the truck will not start until a workshop with dealer-level service tooling has flashed and configured it. On this engine family the flash file is tied to the serial prefix and the horsepower rating, so please send us the following straight after checkout:

  • Engine Serial Number (ESN) in full, including the three-character prefix, plus the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Clear photographs of the ECM currently fitted, with every number on the label legible
  • A photograph of the engine information plate showing the arrangement number and the rated horsepower
  • Truck make, model and year, and the transmission type if the engine is set up for an automated gearbox

Removal and installation should be carried out by an experienced technician. Disconnect both battery banks at the isolator before unplugging anything, and keep the connectors capped while the module is off the engine. One practical tip: keep the old module until the replacement is programmed and running. If the outgoing module still communicates at all, a workshop can often read the parameters, trip data and rating off it first, which makes commissioning the replacement considerably quicker.

Fitment & OEM Interchange

Caterpillar and CAT machine model designations appear below only to identify the equipment this aftermarket module is built to fit. The OEM interchange numbers listed are cross-reference data for identification purposes and do not imply that this part is made, supplied or endorsed by the trademark holder.

Part Number Cross-Reference

Reference Number Format / Role Notes
10R-8732 Primary reference, hyphenated Remanufactured-series numbering as printed on the module label.
10R8732 Same reference, no hyphen The form typed into most parts and stores systems.
10R 8732 Space-separated variant Seen on repair orders and supplier quotations.

Related Reference Numbers — Same Replacement Family

The C-10, C-12, C-16 and 3406E family was supplied with several different control module references across its production run, and the engine serial prefix is what separates them. The notes below are to help you check you are on the right one before ordering.

Reference Number Typical Coverage Difference
Other 10R-prefixed references for this engine family Different serial prefixes and rating groups within the same C-10 / C-12 / 3406E family carry their own module numbers. A module from a different prefix is not a substitute, even though it looks identical.
255-5282 / 2555282 A different family altogether — large-bore C15 / C18 / C27 / C32 generator set, petroleum and mining engines rather than on-highway truck builds.

Before You Order

The serial prefix is the first three characters of the engine serial number, stamped on the engine information plate and usually repeated on the block behind the fuel filter housing. Check that your prefix appears in the list above, then confirm the reference printed on the label of the module you are removing. Two trucks with the same C-12 badge can carry different modules if their prefixes differ, so this check is the single most useful thing you can do before ordering. Send us a photo of the engine plate and the module label and we will verify it for you.

Technical Specifications

Specification Detail

Package Contents 1 × engine control module. Brackets, harness, gaskets and software licences are not included.

This module is supplied to restore factory-specified performance and original operating parameters only. Emissions-related calibration and engine protection strategies are left exactly as the factory defined them; we do not supply, alter or support any change to emissions control functions.

Common Failure Symptoms

On a truck, control module faults usually announce themselves on the road rather than on the shop floor, and they are easy to confuse with fuel supply and wiring problems. The table below covers the symptoms that most often lead back to the module itself on C-10, C-12, C-16 and 3406E engines.

Symptom What It Usually Points To
Engine shuts down at speed with no warning, then restarts after twenty minutes at the roadside A heat-sensitive internal fault — typically a fatigued joint or a degraded capacitor opening as the module warms.
Cranks strongly but will not fire, with no injector solenoid activity at all The unit injector driver stage or the internal supply feeding it has failed.
Injector solenoid or open-circuit codes logged on several cylinders at once A failed driver bank inside the module rather than several injectors failing simultaneously.
Cat ET will not connect to the engine ECM although the dash powers up normally A dead data link transceiver inside the module, or a lost power or ground feed at the ECM connector.
Speedometer, tachometer or engine data on the dash drops out intermittently while the truck keeps running The module is still controlling the engine but has stopped transmitting reliably on the data link.
Cruise control, PTO or engine brake functions stop working with everything else normal Failed input or output circuits inside the module on those specific channels.
Engine will not shut down on the key and has to be stalled or isolated An output stage inside the module stuck holding the fuel command active.
Sudden derate to a low power ceiling with no boost, fuel or air restriction found The module has fallen back to a default strategy after detecting an internal fault.

Rule Out The Cheap Causes First

These engines are old enough that the harness is usually the guilty party. Before ordering a module, load-test both batteries, clean and torque the engine-to-frame ground straps, check the ECM power and ignition fuses, and inspect the connectors for green corrosion, spread pins and back-out terminals. Also check the injector harness and the connector at the valve cover, since a chafed injector loom produces multi-cylinder codes that look exactly like a failed driver bank. A ground strap costs almost nothing; a wrongly condemned ECM does not.
