Product Details

This remanufactured Electronic Control Module (ECM / ECU) is an aftermarket replacement for Caterpillar part number 252-2422, covering AP-600D and AP-655D asphalt pavers, the AS2252C screed, the 966H wheel loader and CX28, CX31 and CX35 on-highway transmissions.

Paving is the application that defines this part. An asphalt paver works in a heat envelope of its own making — radiant heat off the mat, a hot screed a few feet behind the operator, and a summer ambient on top of that. Electronics live a shorter life there than almost anywhere else on a construction site. Worse, a paver cannot simply be parked when something fails: the mix in the hopper is cooling, the trucks behind are queuing, and a pass abandoned halfway leaves a joint in the mat that will be visible for the life of the road.

Each unit begins as a tested core and is rebuilt at component level. The board is cleaned and inspected under magnification, with capacitors, driver components and solder joints renewed wherever measurement calls for it — on modules recovered from paving equipment, heat-aged capacitors are the single most common finding. Housing seals and gaskets are replaced, conformal coating is refreshed, and the finished module is bench-tested under simulated load so it will restore factory-specified operating parameters once programmed.

  • Direct replacement fitment — original mounting pattern, connector layout and harness routing, so no wiring modification or bracket fabrication is required.
  • Paving equipment coverage — AP-600D and AP-655D pavers and the AS2252C screed, applications served by very few aftermarket module references.
  • Transmission control applications — CX28, CX31 and CX35 on-highway transmissions.
  • Wheel loader coverage — 966H.
  • Component-level remanufacture — rebuilt from a tested core with renewed electronics, refreshed conformal coating and resealed housing.
  • Heat-aware rebuild focus — capacitors are the first casualty in a paving environment, and they are assessed and renewed rather than left in place.
  • Function-restoring, not performance-altering — supplied to restore original operating parameters; no calibration changes of any kind are made to the unit.
  • 6-month warranty — repair or replacement service if any fault appears within the period.

Make Sure You Are Replacing the Right Box

This reference appears in both engine control and transmission control roles depending on the application. On a machine or vehicle fitted with more than one control module, the boxes look broadly similar, mount in similar ways and carry adjacent part numbers. Replacing the wrong one is the most common reason a module gets returned.

Before ordering: read the label on the specific unit you intend to replace, not on whichever module you found first. If the label does not read 252-2422, it is not this part — send us a photograph and we will identify the right one.

Important: Programming Is Required Before Use

This module is not plug-and-play. Every installation carries its own calibration, and the unit must be flashed to your specific serial number by a qualified technician using approved diagnostic software before it will operate correctly. Because this reference covers both engine and transmission roles, the configuration loaded also has to match the function the module will perform.

Please send us the following after purchase:

  • Engine Serial Number (ESN) and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Clear photographs of your current ECM / ECU unit
  • A clear photograph of the engine or machine data plate

Installation and removal of a control module should always be carried out by an experienced technician. Allow the machine to cool, lower any raised implement, disconnect the battery and isolate before any work begins.

Before ordering: this reference spans four quite different kinds of installation, and within any one of them build date and specification can change which module is fitted. The machine model alone will not confirm it. Read the number on the label of the unit you are replacing, and if it does not read 252-2422, send us a photograph of the label along with your serial number and we will identify the correct part before you buy.

Common Failure Symptoms

Because this reference serves both engine and transmission roles, the symptoms fall into two groups. Work out which box is misbehaving before you order anything.

Symptom What It Usually Points To
Paver faults appear late in a hot day Heat soak. A machine that works fine at seven in the morning and starts throwing codes by mid-afternoon is describing a thermal fault, not an intermittent electrical one. Note the ambient and how many hours in it takes.
Inconsistent travel speed spoiling mat quality Speed control that will not hold steady shows up in the finished surface before it shows up as a fault code. Check hydraulic supply and the speed feedback signal before condemning the module.
Machine will not start at the first job of the season After a winter in the yard, battery condition is the usual answer, not the module. Load-test the battery and check for rodent damage to the harness before ordering anything.
Harsh shifting or stuck in gear (CX transmissions) On a transmission application, check fluid level and condition first. Shift quality complaints originate in the hydraulics far more often than in the control module.
Engine fine, transmission faulted (or the reverse) This is your best clue about which box to replace. A fault confined to one system points squarely at that system’s controller, not at the other one sitting next to it.
No communication with diagnostic software Data link failure. Confirm whether the tool can see the other controllers on the machine — if it sees some and not others, the problem is isolated to one module or its wiring.
Erratic or impossible sensor readings Degraded internal reference voltage causing false values across several channels at once.
Bitumen or dust packed around the connector A paving-specific problem. Tack coat overspray and mix dust build up around the housing, hold heat against it and work into a marginal seal. Clean and inspect before assuming a board fault.

Two things to settle before ordering. First, which controller is actually at fault — a fault confined to the transmission is not an engine module problem, and vice versa. Second, the usual cheap causes: battery condition, ground straps, charging voltage and connector corrosion imitate module failure far more often than the module itself. On paving equipment, add a check for heat damage to the harness where it runs near the screed. Confirm with a full diagnostic scan before replacing.
