Product Details
▾
This engine monitor display panel is an aftermarket replacement for part number 198-9749, supplied new and fitted as a direct replacement across Caterpillar marine engines from 3126B up to C32, 3500 series marine auxiliary units, SBF214 and SUF557 pumper packages and 3126B industrial engines.
Two things distinguish the installations this panel serves. The first is pump packages — SBF214 and SUF557 units running at sustained load, often on a job site or a well pad where the nearest replacement part is a long way away and a blind engine means the pump stops. The second is twin and multi-engine vessels, where each engine has its own panel and losing one leaves the operator running half the boat on instinct.
In both cases the panel is doing the same job: turning oil pressure, coolant temperature, speed and fault status into something a person can act on. When it stops, the engine usually keeps running — which is precisely the problem, because a developing fault now has nobody watching it.
- Direct replacement fitment — matches the original panel cut-out, mounting studs and harness connector, so no bezel modification or rewiring is needed.
- New condition — supplied unused, in plain protective packaging without third-party branding.
- Pumper package coverage — SBF214 and SUF557 units, applications not covered by most display panel references.
- Wide marine engine range — 3126B, 3176B, 3176C, 3196, 3406E, 3408B, 3412, 3412E, 3508B, 3512B, 3516B, C7, C9, C12, C-12 and C32.
- Includes 3408B — an older platform many replacement panels no longer list.
- Marine auxiliary applications — 3508B, 3512B and 3516B auxiliary sets.
- Marine-grade enclosure — sealed front face and gasketed rear housing intended for engine room humidity, salt air and vibration.
- 6-month warranty — repair or replacement service if any fault appears within the period.
Important: Programming Is Required Before Use
This panel is not plug-and-play. Every engine carries its own configuration, and the unit must be programmed to match your installation by a qualified technician using approved service software before it will display correctly. On a twin-engine vessel each panel is configured to its own engine, so a unit set up for the port engine will not simply move across to starboard.
Please send us the following after purchase:
- The part number of your original monitor, plus a clear photograph of it
- A clear photograph of the machine nameplate (VIN plate)
If you are replacing one panel on a multi-engine installation, tell us which engine it serves.
Installation and removal of an engine monitor panel should always be carried out by an experienced technician. Isolate the installation from all power sources, including battery and shore supply, before any work begins.

Read Your Own Panel Label Before Ordering
Caterpillar used several display panel references across overlapping ranges of these same engines, and panels that look identical from the front can carry different specifications behind it. The engine model alone will not tell you which panel your installation takes. Read the label on the rear of your existing panel and order against that number. If it does not read 198-9749, send us a photograph of the label together with the machine nameplate and we will identify the correct part before you buy.

Replacing one panel on a twin-engine boat? Take a photograph of the label on both panels before ordering. Vessels are often refitted one engine at a time, and it is not unusual to find two different panel references installed on the same boat. Knowing which one you actually need saves a return and a second delay.

Common Failure Symptoms
▾
The hardest part of diagnosing a display panel is deciding whether the panel is wrong or the engine is. These checks help separate the two before you spend money on either.
| Symptom | What to Check |
|---|---|
| Panel disagrees with the mechanical gauge | Where a mechanical gauge is fitted alongside, it settles the argument quickly. If the gauge is right and the panel is wrong, the fault is on the display side; if both read the same, believe them and look at the engine. |
| One panel wrong on a twin-engine boat | The best diagnostic tool you already own. Run both engines at the same speed and compare the two panels. A single panel reading out of step with an otherwise identical engine is almost certainly the panel or its wiring. |
| Panel resets while the engine is cranking | Supply voltage dipping below the panel’s holding threshold as the starter draws. Common on large-bore 3500 series engines with tired batteries. Load-test the battery before suspecting the panel. |
| Fine at the dock, faults underway | Vibration and hull movement working a marginal connector or a fatigued solder joint. Wiggle-test the rear connector with the engine running before ordering a replacement. |
| Readings drift as the engine warms | Thermal drift in the panel’s input stage. Note whether the error grows steadily with engine temperature — a fault that tracks temperature is on the electronics side, not the sender. |
| Screen dark but the engine runs | Backlight or internal supply failure. Check panel supply voltage and the harness connector first. |
| Alarms not annunciating | Alarm output stage failure. On an unattended pump package this is the most serious mode — the engine appears monitored but nothing will raise a fault. |
| Corrosion around the connector or bezel | Failed seal admitting moisture. Usually terminal once it reaches the board, but clean and inspect first — corroded pins alone will produce the same symptoms. |
Use the second engine, or the mechanical gauge. On a twin-engine vessel or a pump package with backup instrumentation, you already have a reference to compare against, and that comparison will tell you more in five minutes than any amount of guesswork. Where no comparison exists, check panel supply voltage, ground integrity and connector condition before ordering — those account for most panels that turn out not to have been faulty at all.
